Hi There,
I started this site to promote women in sport. Seeing other women take on a physical challenge and do their best really inspires me in my own daily life, and I'm sure you feel that way too.
Often it appears women's sport doesn't get the airtime it should in our media. I live in Melbourne, Australia and even in a country famous for its love of sport, women's sport accounts for only 9% of media coverage as opposed to 81% for men's sport and 10% for horseracing!
Yep, the horsies beat us outright in the sport news stakes...see the quote below from Towards a Level Playing Field: sport and gender in Australian media report compiled for the Australian Sports Commission by the Journalism and Media Research Centre at the University of NSW and Media Monitors Pty Ltd (May 2010):

The research found that female sport receives a disproportionately low amount of coverage in Australian media compared to male sport (women’s sport was discussed in 9% of the television news reports analysed, compared to 81% for male sport, with the remainder devoted to horseracing and, to a lesser extent, mixed sports). For the first time, research showed that television news reports on female sport also had the lowest average duration of all types of sport. This provided one of the more sobering sound bytes associated with the research: horseracing alone receives more airtime than all women's sport combined, in Australian television.
Are you feeling a little bit peeved right now or just plain fed up? Well ladies, let's see if we can get even on our own terms by being our biggest fans! If there's a sport for women that you want to see more of or learn about, drop me a line and I promise to research it for you and publish my results right here on my website.
I'm tired of this image of women being bitchy to each other - aren't you? This website is to share a passion for sport with other likeminded women without national or racial bias; its about being global citizens and helping one another. If you want to share your passion in sport with us as a fan or as a participant then we want to hear about it!
Here's a great quote from Australian Womensport and Recreation Association's Media page:
It is very difficult to explain the lack of balance in coverage of Australian sport. Why is it that about 90-99% of all sports coverage (depending on whether you look at print, radio or television) is devoted to male sport? Is it entrenched sexism of the media outlets, the journalists and sports editors or is it a matter of prejudice and dollars involved to cover only the sports that have a personal or financial interest/gain?
Lack of media coverage of women's sport is a major issue for the sports industry, not just for women involved in sport. Until there is a better balance the Australian sports industry is not going to develop to its full potential.
The same can be said for women's sport worldwide. It got me thinking that it would be great to connect with other likeminded women so we can inspire and support each other through our shared love of sport . We all need to feel empowered in our everyday life. Sport makes me feel:
-
Strong
-
Positive
-
Open
-
Relaxed
-
Tenacious
I hope this site does the same for you. So take a break from your day job here at Sportswoman and be inspired to play hard!
Power to You,
Aneeta Krishna
